For forty-one years, BB King has honored the memory of slain Civil Rights leader Medgar Evers with an annual concert to welcome home Mississippians who left during times of segregation. The legendary blues man paused several times during his recent 2004 Medgar Evers Homecoming Concert to acknowledge Senator Hoffmann and students from her Civil Rights Connection Program in the audience. King praised Senator Hoffmann for her continuing commitment to Civil Rights and thanked her for bringing students to Mississippi for the past nine years to learn about the Civil Rights Movement.
Senator Hoffmann was a Civil Rights Volunteer in Mississippi during the early 1970's when she was a student at Syracuse University. During her time in Mississippi she worked closely with Charles Evers, brother of Medgar Evers. Senator Hoffmann created the Civil Rights Connection Program to educate a new generation about the Civil Rights Movement. Since 1994, over a hundred students from across the 49th District have made the life-changing journey South with Senator Hoffmann.
