Events & Activities - Carnegie Afterschool Program Visit - November 12, 2003

State Senator Nancy Larraine Hoffmann announced October 30th that the Senate will restore state funding for New York's Advantage After School Program, a program which provides grants to not-for-profit providers to run a variety of after-school programs in school districts locally and throughout New York.

"The Advantage After School program is a highly successful one that provides valuable services to the students and families. The program is a critical part of shaping the future of these young people.

It's a very good investment and the Senate is demonstrating it has a very strong commitment to the children of this state," Senator Hoffmann said.

Senator Hoffmann continued, "The $1.7 million funding restoration will keep the programs operating through the end of the current state fiscal year and I urge the Governor to include full funding for them in his 2004-05 Executive Budget."

The Syracuse Renaissance Academy at Carnegie School was one of the threatened programs so they invited Senator Hoffmann to spend an afternoon with the students and staff so they could show their appreciation.

Senator Hoffmann explained how the funding shortfall occurred, why it was difficult for many people to understand how it happened, and how it was fixed, at least temporarily.

The Students wanted to know how they could help make sure full funding is restored in the next State Budget. Senator Hoffmann told them to stay involved. Make sure elected officials all the up to the Governor's office know they are concerned and do it with the same respect they demonstrated at the rally held at Seymour School back in October (click on Press Releases for more on the Rally).

In the music studio, students were laying down the tracks for an original song. The computer is equipped with editing and mixing programs.

15 year old Terry Armfield, a student from Henninger High School, gave Senator Hoffmann flowers and a scrapbook to show their appreciation for her efforts. Mike Brown, a videographer for WIXT Channel 9, taped the afternoon activities and the story was aired that night during the 11 o'clock news.
