Events & Activities - Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum - New Education Center Dedication - June 15, 2003

Over 200 people attended the dedication and ribbon cutting for the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum Education Center.

Senator Hoffmann has been involved from day one with grants to help excavate the historical site since 1985. Ground was broken for the Education Center July 19, 2001. Senator Hoffmann presented the Museum with a check for $100,000 to help with the construction. The 3,000 square foot Education Center cost $300,000 and includes offices, classrooms, and restrooms.

Several thousand visitors pass through the entrance each year. Dozens of schools and tour groups take advantage of the Museum's highly detailed exhibits. The beautiful new Education Center means even more people will be able to enjoy their programs.

The Harmony Time Quartet provided the entertainment for the ceremonies.

(Senator Hoffmann and Program Emcee Bud Penner, Museum Treasurer, who introduced her as "Our Angel") Senator Hoffmann recounted the history of the museum and landing for those attending the ceremonies and the audience listening on WMCR Radio . She said,

"You are witnesses to an act of faith. In 1985 this area was filled with junk and scrub brush. Today, the volunteers have created a wonderful showcase for our canal heritage. I stand here a proud State representative believing I have done my job the way it should be done, helping the dedicated volunteers make this happen. This is a rare historical enterprise that does not have a paid staff, most of the people have made this a labor of love and for that I will always be eternally grateful. This is a wonderful day."

Museum President, Joan DiChristina and Vice-President, Dave Peil, watch as Senator Hoffmann takes a pair of shears to the tow rope for the formal ribbon cutting.

Museum President Joan DiChristina presents Senator Hoffmann with a copy of CLASSIC PLACE NAMES IN NEW YORK by Fayetteville author William R. Farrell.

Sandy Rolewicz of Vernon, NY demonstrates the craft of chaircaning. Blacksmithing and woodworking demonstrations are also available to help people learn about the life and times of the canal boat builder.
