Events & Activities - Maxwell School Security Studies at Syracuse University - March 21, 2003

Maxwell graduate, Senator Nancy Larraine Hoffmann, returned to the school Friday as a guest lecturer on community and government relations. She joined Bill Smullen, Deputy Director of the Program and a retired Army colonel and former Chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell, and David Berteau, Director of the Program and former Deputy Secretary of Defense.

Military officials with a rank of colonel and higher plus civilian government officials with similar authority attended Maxwell's National Securities Studies Program.

The program explores the range of national security management challenges addressing global economics, interagency coordination, collective defense arrangements, and public-private perspectives.

Senator Hoffmann filled in for U.S. Senator John Warner (R, Virginia). He was unable to attend because of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Senator Hoffmann offered participants insight into local-national government agency interaction.

Senator Hoffmann and Onondaga County Emergency Management Director Pete Alberti fielded questions about how to handle the local news media in crisis situations.
