Events & Activities - Sinking Homes - Town of Cato - Cayuga County - February 18, 2003

Three Cayuga County homeowners had their homes damaged when a section of land along the Seneca River dropped 20 feet. It happened about 11pm on February 12, 2003 affecting a 120 foot wide strip of land about a quarter of a mile long.

Barry and Anne Hopkins' home off Jordan Road used to sit on a hill overlooking the river. Now a third of the house dangles over the newly created cliff. The landslide occured just days after the State Canal Corporation lowered the river level to repair a floodgate in Baldwinsville but soil tests are being done to determine if there is any connection.

The State Director of the Office of Emergency Management, Ed Jacoby, is introduced to Cayuga County Sheriff Rob Outhouse by Senator Hoffmann. Director Jacoby toured the area affected by the sinking shoreline at the request of Senator Hoffmann.

Area homeowners were briefed on State efforts to find the source of the problem and on efforts to find help to make their homes liveable again.
